How to clean your crystals

How do you cleanse (energetically and physically clean up) crystals, stones, minerals?
Many practitioners who work with crystals for healing, magic, holistic use, color therapy, and more, believe that crystals absorb or interact with energies.
Over time, they may accumulate negative energy alongside the positive.
To keep your crystals working at their best, it’s a good idea to cleanse them from time to time.
So, how can you cleanse your crystals?

Before jumping to that subject, let’s expand the knowledge base.

Why we need to clean and cleanse crystals?

It is a fair question and a wonderful opportunity to dive a bit and extend, maybe our basic knowledge about crystals, stones and minerals.

It is known that some crystals, minerals, stones interact with energies, vibrations, light, sounds, temperatures, mechanic stress in various ways with various results, therefore from holistic perspective some believe that the crystalline structure of these stones can interact with various subtle energies.

All objects have their own natural frequency at which they vibrate most easily. Applying this knowledge to crystals, the resonant frequency can affect the energetic properties of crystals.

Because crystals and minerals interact with different types of energy, they sometimes get a little overloaded, holding onto vibes that are no longer helpful. Imagine them as tools with specific energetic roles:

Storage Devices (Batteries)
Crystals like clear quartz, selenite, and amethyst act like batteries. They absorb and store energy from their surroundings, both the good and not-so-good.
Over time, this stored energy can become heavy or stagnant, making it harder for the crystal to do its job.

Energy Converters (Transformers)
Crystals such as citrine and carnelian are known for transforming energy, like turning low vibes into uplifting ones. However, even they sometimes need a “reset” to clear out lingering residue and stay effective.

Energetic Capacitors: Not the most common analogy, but it works! Capacitors store electrical energy, just like some crystals seem to hold onto specific energetic frequencies. Cleansing helps release those frequencies and bring them back to neutral.

Crystals need regular cleansing just like any tool we use. It’s like hitting the reset button, helping them release old energies and return to their natural, powerful state.

Here are some popular ways to cleanse your crystals:

Smudging
Pass your crystal through the smoke of burning sage, palo santo, or cedar. The smoke is a medium and helps clear negative energy and purify the crystal.

Salt Water Soak
Place your crystal in a bowl of sea salt or Himalayan salt water for a few hours or overnight.
Not all crystals are safe for this method, so check first! Some, like selenite, can dissolve in water. Some crystals placed in salt will become inert, void of any energy field of their own.

Running Water
Hold the crystal under running water, like a natural spring or tap water (if it’s safe for your stone). As the water flows, imagine it washing away any unwanted energy. Rivers and streams are more powerful when it comes to cleansing.

Sunlight or Moonlight
Give your crystal a recharge by placing it in direct sunlight (but not for too long, some crystals can fade) or under the light of a full moon.
Moonlight is gentler and always a safe bet!

Visualization
Hold the crystal in your hands, close your eyes, and picture it surrounded by pure white light. Imagine any negative energy being cleared and transformed into positive energy.

Sound Vibration
Use sound to cleanse your crystal’s energy field. Singing bowls, tuning forks, or even chanting can do the trick.

Reiki or Energy Healing
If you’re trained in Reiki or other energy healing practices, you can cleanse and recharge your crystals with these methods.

Just like us, crystals need a little self-care every now and then. A well-cared-for crystal will always be at its best, ready to support you energetically!
